The NJT F40PH-2CAT were standard NJT F40PH-2 units heavily modified and rebuilt to accommodate a 750-hp CAT diesel engine for the HEP alternator. The HEP (head-end generator) is used to generate the power required for lighting, heating and air-conditioning in passenger service coaches. With the addition of the HEP engine this allowed the prime mover to operate at varied speeds which resulted in the unit being quieter, unlike the original F40PH which had to have the prime mover run at a constant speed of 900RPM even when the unit was stationary to generate power. This modification resulted in the units body being lengthened by two feet which extended over the rear platform and railing. Extra grills were also added to accommodate the redesigned engine equipment. The rebuild of these units was carried out at Conrail's Juniata Shops in Altoona between 1996 - 1998. Currently only two of the original 17 units that were rebuilt are still utilised and now run as secondary services.
