The EMD F59PH is a diesel-electric engine which is commonly used by 'Go Transit' in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, but also can be found in other areas of the United States such as Los Angeles, California.

The engine has 3,000 horsepower and is equipped with a turbocharged EMD 12-710G3A, 12 cylinder, and 2 stroke water cooled “Vee” prime mover. Originally developed for 'Go Transit' EMD based the design from a GP59, giving it a full cowl body, Canadian cab along with a HEP generator. These new locomotives prior to the F40s were more fuel-efficient and because of the additional HEP Genset the operator could have more efficient driving conditions

The Head End Power (HEP) unit provides power to the passenger cars which is used for heating, lighting and air conditioning. This HEP is powered by a dedicated second diesel engine, thus removing the electrical power generation from the prime mover.
